About WMV
WMV stands for Windows Media Video.
WMV, developed by Microsoft, is a generic name of Microsoft's video encoding solutions and doesn't necessarily define the technology what it uses. In WMV7, Microsoft has used its own flavour of MPEG4 video encoding technology. You can use a .wmv file either to download and play files or to stream content.
Windows Media Video is used for both streaming and downloading content via the Internet. Microsoft's Windows Media Player, an application bundled with Windows XP operating systems, lets you playback and manage a range of audio and video file types, including, of course, WMA and WMV.
The WMV extension is most commonly used to refer to the WMV codec use. Nowadays, the WMV codec competes with other industry heads such as DivX and MPEG4. The first WMV codec supported native interlaced video support and frame interpolation. When the WMV 9 codec was introduced, it supported higher video resolutions up to 1080p. Natively integrated within the WMV9 codec was Windows Media Video 9 Professional, which became active when resolutions over 300,000 pixels were exceeded.
About AVI
AVI is a derivative of the Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF), which divides a file's data into blocks, or "chunks." Each "chunk" is identified by a FourCC tag. An AVI file takes the form of a single chunk in a RIFF formatted file, which is then subdivided into two mandatory "chunks" and one optional "chunk". AVI was not intended to contain video using any compression technique which requires access to future video frame data beyond the current frame. Approaches exist to support modern video compression techniques (MPEG-4) which rely on this functionality, although this is beyond the intent of the original specification and may cause problems with playback software which does not anticipate this use.
